Moisture is well known for getting into the cracks and crevices of brick and concrete, then expanding during a freeze, causing damage to the surfaces. Icicles can also pose a big danger, especially when over train tracks and roadways.
Other moisture issues include corrosion of metals and degradation of roofs and other outside structures over time. Network Rail is the owner and operator of most of the rail infrastructure in Great Britain. They had a costly issue in the winter. When icicles form inside the train tunnels or on bridges, they can drop off onto the tracks or underlying roadway causing safety issues. Millions in costs are spent each year removing ice before that can happen.
After a very successful 2-phase trial that ran from 2011 through 2013, they began a maintenance rollout of Synavax™ coating technology to coat tunnels and bridges to provide an icephobic surface and provide resistance to icicle formation to reduce the cost for icicle removal and increase rail safety.
